Laser Acne Treatments

Laser acne treatments use special laser light to resurface the skin and destroy acne bacteria. The result is often a dramatic reduction in the appearance of acne. This treatment is performed by many dermatologists around the nation. There may be mild discomfort associated with this procedure although most people find it virtually painless. Recovery time is short and may include mild bruising or swelling of the area where the laser was applied. After the skin has been resurfaced it is often smoother and more beautiful than it was before.

This type of acne treatment is somewhat costly, with treatments costing upwards of $1000 each. Of course, if you have tried everything and cannot get rid of your acne you are probably ready to pay any price. Because there are not many federal laws in place to regulate laser acne treatment it is important to research your practitioner and ask to see before and after photos of previous work. You should only get laser resurfacing from a licensed dermatologist who has plenty of experience with this procedure. Laser resurfacing may not be recommended for dark skin as it may cause discoloration.

A related treatment that you may want to consider is blue light therapy. Unlike laser resurfacing, blue light therapy is totally painless. The blue light kills the acne bacteria on the skin. The light is applied to the skin for only around 15 minutes per session with sessions being about a week apart. This treatment is usually less expensive than laser resurfacing and can even be done at home using special equipment. If your dermatologist offers both laser resurfacing and blue light therapy he or she can explain the differences to you and recommend the treatment that is best suited for your skin.

Like with any treatment, laser acne treatments do not provide immediate results. They do, however, work more quickly than most topical or oral medications. The majority of users have found improvement within twelve weeks. Your dermatologist may also recommend certain topical products to be used in between laser resurfacing sessions. When used in conjunction with topical treatments laser treatment sessions can be an ideal treatment for stubborn acne. The number of sessions required will depend on the severity of your acne and how it responds to treatment.
